Summary

The role of women in the Civil War is often overlooked. Although women were not allowed to enlist, at least two infantry women were shot while fighting at the Battle of Stones River. Women also ran family farms and served as spies and nurses in the war effort. Students will read, discuss and make judgments about the dilemmas that women faced during the Civil War as presenters make cross-curricular links to language arts, social studies and womens studies.
