Summary

While being a prisoner during the Civil War presented many physical and psychological problems for the captured soldier, prisoners also presented problems to the individuals and governments responsible for their security, care, and feeding. Union and Confederate leaders had to negotiate common terms for the care of prisoners. In this program, students will participate in classroom activities to help them understand the basic needs of prisoners, how to manage conflict and negotiate with others, and what primary sources reveal about the care of prisoners during the Civil War.
